Student Assessment of Instructors

April 26, 2007

I have activated the online Student Assessment of Instructors tool in Blackboard. You can access it through the Tools menu in Blackboard on the IE 801 page. I would really appreciate it if you would complete this assessment before the final exam on Monday, April 30.  Your completion of this assessment is important to me! I do use these assessments to try to improve my teaching and this course. Thanks! Joel Greenstein

Paper questions

March 9, 2007

More questions about the report…

The third matrix:  We have hit a wall after the 2nd matrix because we have decided to keep all of those concepts. We remember your suggestion in class of how to proceed for the third matrix by comparing each column, but cannot remember exactly what to do.  Can you please remind of us of how to proceed in this situation? Also, do we need to do a concept classification tree and concept combination table?

Project 3 Paper

March 9, 2007

How many concept descriptions do we need to include in the paper (for every single concept we developed or just for the final few concepts)? How much information for each of the descriptions are you looking for?

Wednesday’s Project 3 Show and Tell

March 4, 2007

Here’s what I’m hoping to see on Wednesday, when you present your show and tell…

1. If you have tried to decompose the problem using a problem decomposition, show us the decomposition.

2. Present at least 6 different complete concepts that your team has developed.

3. Present a draft of the concept screening matrices that you are to developing (with selection criteria listed along the left and concepts listed along the top of each matrix).

Wednesday’s Project 2 Show and Tell

February 11, 2007

Here’s what I’m hoping to see on Wednesday, when you present your show and tell…

A draft of your target specifications, including:

1. an updated list of client and user needs (see Exhibit 5-2, p. 73, U&E)
2. a numbered list of metrics (see Exhibit 5-4, p. 76, U&E)

3. some discussion of the systems (the existing system and some other system) you have chosen to benchmark

You will perhaps not have gotten much farther than this, at this point, but it would also be great to see:

4. at least the beginnings of a competitive benchmarking chart based on metrics (Exhibit 5-6, pp. 80-81, U&E), with target specifications (marginal and ideal values) added on the right-hand-side of the chart (Exhibit 5-8 on p. 84, U&E)

Recommendation Section for Project 1

February 6, 2007

Our group is a little confused as to what the recommendation should include for this first product since we shouldn’t be thinking in terms of solutions yet. Can someone clear this up for us? Thanks

Star importance ratings?

February 5, 2007

Dr.Greenstein,
In looking through Ulrich and Eppinger, they suggest taking survey results and turning them into ‘star’ importance ratings. Where stars go 1-5 to denote the importance of a need. My question is why take perfectly good numerical data, both raw numbers and percentages, and turn them into stars.
It blows my  psychologist brain to lose that resolution… :smoke from ears:

So, the question is can I just use the numerical and percentage ratings?

Are the Importance Surveys a Part Of Project 1?

February 1, 2007

A students asks: Are we supposed to distribute and analyze the importance surveys in Project 1?

Answer: Yes, the importance survey has to be distributed and analyzed in Project 1. Part d of the project assignment requires that you submit a hierarchical list of primary and secondary needs with numeric importance ratings. You obtain the numeric importance ratings by summarizing the results from the surveys.
The project assignment also says that you are to use Ulrich & Eppinger’s five step methodology for identifying customer needs. Step 4 is “Establish the Relative Importance of the Needs.” This is done by distributing and analyzing the results of the survey.
